Located in the southern Drôme region, Terra Provence was founded by Hans-Ulrich Wentzler, familiarly known as Ulli. His attraction to the sunny south of France led him to the Baronnies region in the late 1970s, where he met local lavender growers. He soon made friends with them and developed a business picking and producing distillation of the region's aromatic and medicinal plants, which he delivered as far away as Germany in his 2CV!
The idea of setting up his own company was born in his mind and took shape in 1989 under the name Wentzler.
Then came the time of travels and encounters: first Morocco in 1990, from where he brought back orange blossom floral water, then Portugal, where he met producers of verbena and eucalyptus. Then came Turkey, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Egypt... With each visit, bonds of trust and solidarity were forged. The man who today would be described as "baba cool" is a friend of peace, and seeks to understand how to preserve our Earth for future generations. For him, organic farming was a matter of course: man and earth must live in harmony. So, in 1991, he founded Terra Provence, a forerunner in organic farming! Faithful to his convictions and to the organic spirit, he paid for the first organic certifications for producers; this spirit was to be the guiding principle in the relationship between Terra Provence and the farmers.
For Ulli, the choice of the name Terra Provence is very involving. From the Latin Terrameaning "land", it refers to the Roman civilization so prevalent in our region, and Provence, in homage to the region that welcomed him so warmly.
A word from Hans-Ulrich Wentzler:
Turn around and look at your path. Everything becomes luminous. Doubts, fatigue and hardships don't weigh too heavily in the face of encounters and friendships.
At the age of 26, going to Amsterdam to see Van Gogh's paintings, going straight to France to see these same landscapes, then a detour to the Drôme, to the village of Buis-les-Baronnies and its Ouvèze river, where I saw an infinitely deep sky for the first time, and the decision was made.
I set up without a plan, without means. Years of picking for various farmers and for myself followed: wild lavender from the Montagne de Lure, rosemary from the Luberon, distilled and bottled in Amsterdam and Hamburg. It wasn't serious in the long run; no less serious than being on a 30-horsepower Massey Ferguson tractor and crabbing up hills: my first plantations in rough terrain.
Chance, luck. These two girls who take a liter of lavender from me, this guy who interrupts the inventory of his little store to buy a bag of thyme leaves, this English tourist who wants to take a photo of me in my fields become important distributors. I had to create a network of producers. Terra Provence was born. From there, slowly and in concentric circles, the network was built up over 30 years, with loyalty to producers and customers as its watchword.
The new team continues in this vein, and I'm delighted.
Now retired from the business, I live nearby and remain very close to the company and its teams. I'm keen to follow its development and offer advice and encouragement.
