It's citrus season in January!

This month, we set off to meet our suppliers in Calabria and Sicily.

We began with our long-standing suppliers of organic, cold-expressed bergamot essential oil. For over 20 years, we've been working with small-scale producers who grow between 1 and 7 hectares of bergamot trees. They cultivate and harvest in January, so that the fruit is ripe, i.e. when the bergamot skin is yellow.

We also visited a small processing plant that makes only organic bergamots. To give you an idea, this small expression unit is capable of processing 10T of fruit/day, compared with 100T/day for intermediate units and much more for the very large manufacturers. For this contract work, the growers then recover their batch of organic bergamot essential oil.

We also met organic mandarin growers who divide their production between eating fruits and the production of organic essential oils.

They also work with a processor who guarantees traceability and transparency for producers, from the fruit to the sale of their essential oil. The mandarin growers are 100% organic, producing organic green mandarin essential oil in October and organic red mandarin essential oil in November. The quality of organic green mandarin essential oil of Italian origin differs from the quality of "green mandarin" of Brazilian origin, as the latter is more akin to a variety of tangerine.

Several cold expression techniques are used according to different criteria: fruit varieties, size of fruit juice market, fruit size, fruit maturity....

pilatrici : "zest

"Brown": treadmill with needles and water flowing in opposite directions

the sfumatrice and torchio: an extruder that mixes juice and essential oil, which are then separated.

"in line": a specialized line for extracting the best juice, while at the same time scarifying the citrus peel to extract the essential oil.

After this extraction stage, the essential oil is separated from the water by centrifugation and clarification. At the end of the process, citrus essential oils are glazed to remove natural waxes.
